Butter Jade, also known as African Jade, is an ancient stone found in the greenstone belt of Southern Africa. This stone is typically around 50 million years old. It is often used to carve smooth polished sculptures that are left in the natural color of the Butter Jade stone. Butter Jade stone is an expensive gemstone that is highly praised by carvers and is a light green stone that has flecks of black and darker green color in it that makes the stone have a marbled look. The Butter Jade stone has been crafted in Zimbabwe by Shona sculptors who have been said to be some of the best stone carvers in the world. Butter Jade has a hardness between 6.5 and 7 on the Mohs Hardness Scale.
